Erosion is a world-wide problem. Highly erosive soils, steep slopes, and areas with weathered rock are at a high risk for excessive erosion. Human activities, including construction of new roadways and embankments that remove ground cover and often change drainage patterns, have dramatically intensified rates of erosion. Erosion causes serious problems, including damage to the ecosystem, soil loss, and water sedimentation – leading to clogged waterways, devastated agricultural land, and contaminated drinking water.
| Problem(s) | Solutions |
![]() Protect or Restore Habitat To conserve existing natural areas and restore damaged areas, provide habitat, and promote biodiversity |
![]() Stormwater Design: Quality and Control To limit disruption of natural water flow by managing stormwater runoff: reducing impervious cover; increasing on-site infiltration; reducing or eliminating pollution; and filtering and eliminating contaminants |
![]() Unstable Flow Paths To dissipate energy and prevent scour downstream from culverts, pipes, pavements, or transition areas |
![]() Roadway Erosion To quickly secure and restore roadway embankments |
